Unscene Sets

profile

Benny Capp is sought after for his richly colourful, concept-based portraits that touch lightly on the absurd. He’s also known – for better or worse – for creating relaxed shoots that disarm even the most poker-faced subjects with his self-deprecating tomfoolery. Benny started out working in the UK with industry-leading photographers and creative directors, where he gained the experience that would lead him home to shoot campaigns for Tennis Australia, Toyota, the AFL, Dairy Australia, Xero, and Golf Australia. Along with his commercial work, Benny keeps busy with passion projects. My Dad’s My Mate celebrates the bond between father and son through pairing portraits with stories. The project’s aim is to bring awareness to depression and build positive mental health outcomes by helping to destigmatise male vulnerability and the importance of the bro-mance between father and son. Unscene Sets is a series of portraits featuring Australia’s best and brightest set designers, decorators and curators working in Film and Television. In artistic collaboration with Benny, the subjects were each asked to compose a 3 x 4 metre set to represent their personality and lifestyle. The result is a series of intimate portraits, each unique with the artists’ own essence. In 2020 and 2021, Benny was a dual finalist for his portraits of Martin Manca, which were displayed in the National Portrait Gallery’s National Photographic Portrait Prize and published in the exhibition catalogue. It’s Benny’s passion for people, their stories, and the power of a single image to speak that brings his photos to life.
