Matt Weston
(PROFILE)Matt Weston has been directing things for over 20 years—some of them award-winning, most of them on purpose. From feature docs and TV to ads and branded content, he’s got a knack for pulling honest, funny, and sometimes accidentally profound moments out of both seasoned talent and complete civilians. He got his start slinging music videos and scrappy ads, racking up over 100 campaigns for brands like Nike, Converse, Nintendo and Worksafe—many of them soaked in that sweet vérité energy that makes you feel like you’re watching something you weren’t supposed to. In 2013, Weston wrote, directed, and edited his debut feature doc Blokes You Can Trust, a grungy love letter to Aussie punk legends Cosmic Psychos. It premiered at MIFF, cracked the Top 10 Audience List, got picked up internationally and now lives on Amazon Prime and Apple TV. It also features Eddie Vedder carrying a 50-cent piece between his butt cheeks. His follow-up doc Made From Melbourne (2021) aired nationally on Channel 7, scored a SHOTS Asia Pacific nomination, and proved he can still tell a good yarn with a polished production. In the commercial world, Weston’s directed work for VW, eBay, AFL, Cadbury, Rexona, and Sportsbet—bagging awards at Cannes (Bronze Lion), Spikes Asia, the New York Festivals, and even a Webby nod. Weston pairs razor-sharp prep with just enough chaos to keep things human—crafting work that’s slick, surprising, and always alive, but never off the rails.
